Local Charities Team Up to Provide School Supplies for Valley Children

(Indio, Calif. –August 5th, 2010) – Martha’s Village & Kitchen, the Coachella Valley Rescue Mission and the Indio Teen Center, have joined forces to collect and distribute backpacks and school supplies for local children in need of assistance with these items.

The backpacks and school supplies will be distributed on a first come - first served basis, on Saturday, August 28, between 8:00 am and 12:00 pm at: Van Buren Elementary School Auditorium, 47-733 Van Buren Street, Indio, CA 92201-7144. Backpack and supplies will be collected at 55 locations throughout the Coachella Valley (see list below).

To donate a backpack or school supplies, simply go to one of the 55 locations and look for specially marked cardboard boxes at the entrances. The boxes will be provided by Burrtec Waste & Recycling Services and will have fliers adhered to the sides of the boxes with the agencies’ logos. Needed supplies include:

Safety scissors, dictionary, pencils, colored pencils, pencil sharpener, erasers, zippered pencil pouch, glue stick, school glue, role of adhesive tape, crayons, box of paints, compass, protractor, legal pads, notebook filler paper, graph paper, spiral notebooks, 3-ring notebooks, 3-ring binders, hole reinforcers, composition books, K-3 writing tablet, construction paper, art pad, index cards, post-it notes, folders, planners, subject dividers, book covers, blue & black pens, felt-tip markers, highlighters, calculator, ruler, hole punch, plastic bags, paper towels, facial tissues, wet wipes, hand soap/hand sanitizer and 3.5” disks.

Totally You (a local hair salon) will provide nine hairdressers to give free haircuts to children on the day of the event inside the Coachella Valley Rescue Mission Chapel from 8:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. Additionally, KDI Kares and Payless Shoes are collecting new shoes for kindergarten through 12th-graders to be handed out on the event day.
